>this has been floating around out there for a while… today a friend sent it to me and reminded me of it…. kids are amazing! they are brilliant and reassuring and compassionate….

i was telling my friend that as a 9-1-1 operator, we always liked getting child callers. they generally are much calmer than adults, and they tend to follow our instructions better than adults. i have to believe it’s because a 5 year old doesn’t understand the full impact of what’s going on… i mean, she knows her dad is sick and needs help right away, but she may not realize what the possible outcomes could be…

adults on the other hand, immediately tend to freak out… get hysterical… very impatient, upset, and it makes for a hard call to manage. 9-1-1 operators are trained to give instructions and have very specific questions that are asked to assess what’s happening. we can give instructions to help the patient, or victim, before EMS or police make location. adults don’t “hear” those instructions many times because they are at such a high level of panic….

so if you ever have to call 9-1-1 please remember ( and i hope you don’t) – listen to the operator, answer the questions even if they seem unnecessary… there is a method to the madness… the more you listen and answer, the better the chance for a positive outcome…. make sure you give good information… give your phone number… give the address with a cross street, and if you don’t know the address tell the operator how to get there…. describe landmarks and cross streets… describe the outside of the house or building, describe any cars/trucks that may be parked out front…

i have learned how important it is to be aware of my surroundings... all the time. i pay attention to cross street signs when i’m traveling…. i pay attention to billboards… i look at my odometer when i pass a major roadway … that way if i ever have a problem and i’m in the boonies i will be able to tell someone “i’m traveling to ______ from _____ and i passed such & such about 4 miles ago….” this will tell the operator pretty much exactly where i am…

okay, that’s the end of my PSA for today… ha!

Being an adult is like looking both ways before you cross the street and then getting hit by an airplane.
